Volunteer - Types of Volunteering

Volunteering - What is expected?

JA Traditional Classroom Format (5-8 Lessons - one hour per lesson)

Using JA prepared curriculum, you will deliver lessons utilizing instructional classroom kits and your experience and knowledge to illustrate concepts so they are relevant and meaningful to the students.

  • The volunteer contacts the teacher at the agreed upon school to arrange the date and time of each visit based on their respective schedules. Schedules in the elementary school level are typically more flexible than in the middle and high schools.

  • Volunteers present the required number of lessons/classroom activities based on grade level
    • Observe the class before starting (optional)
    • Five (5) required lessons for Elementary School
    • Six (6) required lessons for Middle School
    • Five-Eight (5-8) required lessons for High School.

  • Each visit lasts approximately one hour:
    • Check in at the school office
    • Arrive early
    • Present lesson
    • Moderate class discussion
    • Confirm plans for next visit with teacher

  • The teachers are required to remain in the classroom and in charge of their students during your visit and will work with you to ensure the program's success.

JA Blitz Format - (One Day)

In order to accommodate volunteers and teachers who may find it difficult to commit to the traditional lesson per week format, JA has developed an alternative approach, the “Blitz”, that schedules all of the JA lessons for a single school day. In this format JA prepares volunteers to teach all JA lessons in one school day.

  • A school commits a full day for all of their students to participate in JA with no class changes to labs, library, arts, music, etc. You will have the same group of students for the entire day.

  • Day of Blitz: Approximately 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. This includes morning refreshments and briefing session; 4-5 hours or classroom instruction with the students; and lunch (provided by the school or JA).

  • There are 5-6 required lessons that the volunteers present to the students during the day.

  • The teachers are required to remain in the classroom and in charge of their students during your visit and will work with you to ensure the program’s success.

  • A JA Staff Member will be on site all day should you have questions or need assistance.

Quicken Loans JA Finance Park - (One Day)

Quicken Loans JA Finance Park is an experiential learning program located in JA’s administrative offices in Detroit. Middle and high school students visit the park after four weeks of teacher led instruction. Upon arrival at the park, the students a provided with a life scenario and become adults for a day. They participate in a personal budgeting experience by shopping at storefronts sponsored by area businesses.

  • A typical day runs from approximately 8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. depending on students travel time to the facility.

  • Each volunteer is assigned to a storefront and will work with 6-10 students throughout the day helping them to understand the budgeting process. You will help reinforce the concepts that are presented by the JA Staff throughout the day.

  • Lunch is provided for the students and volunteers by Little Caesars.

  • Parking is provided.
